London

The London launch took place on April 14th 2010 at the Ministry Of Sound. We had performances by young people in the play Skin Deep, the artist Doctor and a speech by Barry and Margaret Mizen who lost their son Jimmy, to violent crime in May 2008.

MC Doctor said: “I grew up on an estate in South East London, where there was some gun and knife crime so I know how bad it is. I was lucky because I was focussed on my music and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. But so many young people have died because of crime and it shouldn’t be like that. I want young people to know that they don’t have to choose that way of life. I think Fearless is a really good service because young people need to know that there’s somewhere they can get advice on crimes and pass on information without anyone finding out who they are.”

Chris said. I fully support ‘fearless’ as it is specifically aimed at young people. The ‘fearless’ website, at ‘fearless.org’ gives clear information about crimes which affect young people and gives them the chance to give information about crime anonymously if they do not want to go to the police.

Gloucestershire Fearless launch

Paul Menhinick, Crimestoppers Coordinator for Gloucestershire said: “Young people are one of the most important audiences for Crimestoppers to communicate with. One of the key reasons for re-launching Crimestoppers for young people is to empower them to be ‘fearless’ in passing on information about crime anonymously, safe in the knowledge that their identity will never be revealed and they will not have to speak to the police.”

North East

The fearless launch in the North East was held at Unity City Academy in Middlesborough on Wednesday 24th June.

Chris Preddie, a youth worker for Fearless attended the event to talk to the pupils about his experiences of crime.

Official figures show that almost one in four children aged 10 to 15 have been a victim of crime in the past year. However young people are far less likely to report their experiences, with just 11% going to police, compared with 37% of adults.

Dave Hunter, North-east regional manager for Crimestoppers, told the pupils at the launch at the school: “This website was set up specifically to help you if you find yourself in a difficult situation.
